The Importance Of Where You Host Videos

April 13, 2011 · 44 comments

Video rocks. There is no denying it. And furthermore, there is no disputing that video helps conversion across the board. From landing pages to squeeze pages to sales pages – chances are if you use video – you’ll attract more leads and convert more sales. Period.

But, have you ever given any thought to where you ‘host’ your videos? I mean does it matter if you use YouTube or Viddler? Or what about private hosting like or Does it even matter?

Yes, it does. Here’s why:

Videos are all about getting a response. Now, the response you want your viewers to take depends on the action you want them to take. And, where you host your videos will help dictate what action is intended for them to take. Meaning – different hosting options for videos will support and dictate what type of response your viewer can (or cannot) take.

For example, if you’re hosting a video on a squeeze page or a sales page – what is the desired response from the viewer? Opt-in (in case of a squeeze page) or buy (in case of a sales page.) Correct? So, in that scenario, it makes complete sense to host your videos on a professional service where there is no other option for the viewer to take. You don’t want them to click on the video and get pop up ads or invitations to watch other videos or anything like that. The model is this: watch and opt-in or watch and buy. Nothing else. I prefer to NOT have a player bar (that shows the timer at the bottom of the video) to restrict the ability for the user to fast-forward the video. The professional video hosting services can be enhanced to add your logo or branding to your videos as well as offer clickable-links directly in the videos to your shopping cart or buying process.

However, if you’re posting a video in a blog post or article – where the desired response from the viewer is to comment on your blog or share it with others through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter – I would definitely recommend using a social video hosting service like YouTube or Viddler. I actually welcome the idea that the viewer is inspired by the video so they click on it and see my video channel with ALL my other videos where they can watch them, comment about them, share them, etc. That’s the intent. Branding your ‘social’ videos on a social site like YouTube makes sense.

So… it DOES matter how and where you host the video. Think about it the next time you’re producing videos and automatically choose the same service over-and-over again for hosting. You need to mix it up to get the desired result from your viewers.

That’s great advice. I’m also a fan of professional video vs. poor quality but I think that’s a carryover from my ad agency days.

What do you think about the demise of the Flip? Interesting that it will be discontinued soon.

Write on!~

Derek FredricksonNo Gravatar April 18, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Yeah, I had a place for the flip – served it’s purpose. But, I’m sure they’ll come up with something just as good, it not better!

Great Article Derek… funny how the universe works! I was going to message you today about this very thing. I have a client who has a looooong video – too long for YouTube or Viddler – Where do you host you’re long videos?? I’m looking at an Amazon S3 account for this – do you have a better solution?

Your the best! Crush it!

Derek FredricksonNo Gravatar April 18, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Huge fan of for long videos – seems to work best!

Thank you Derek, great tips and article.
I like also that my viewers are able to see my entire channel. (I also do check others videos and their channel, and refer a lot on the title which tells me right away if this something I am interested in or not.

Derek FredricksonNo Gravatar April 18, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Yes, that’s a great bonus – the more they see the other videos – the more engaged they will be!

Hi Derek

I agree, video clips should be planned and made to fit the different audiences and distribution options

For Launches, consider the ‘Hollywood Marketing Model’ – something we’ve all seen but maybe not thought about for our own promotions

Teaser, Trailer, Main Event

Teasers – generating buzz
Same as you would see at the movies and on DVDs pre-selling the next big thing
These are a good fit for social media
(use to get maximum coverage)

Trailer – list building
Same as you see on the big TV networks – interviews with the stars etc
As we don’t have CNN and BBC… we should work with our affiliates!
These videos should be on the affiliates sites and if possible allow for re-direction or direct opt-in
Our service is a good fit here and we’re working on a new service called

Main Event – close the sale
The movie opens and the lines form!
Online, we need to have a production that closes the sale and is congruent with the materials already distributed
Here you need to be able to simplify the order taking and make sure the viewer does not get distracted and so social media video is not a good fit

And one last thought – there isn’t such a thing as ‘Free Hosting’ … it’s ‘Ad-Sponsored Hosting’ and the impact those ads have on productions need to be considered against the value of the hosting

With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my agreement. Do you know any ways to help stop content from being ripped off? I’d definitely appreciate it.

Derek FredricksonNo Gravatar September 8, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Isaac – great question. If they are using your content and giving you credit for the article or post – then it’s a good thing. It spreads your message and let’s others know you have something to share. I don’t personally deal with copyright or plagorism since my content is so unique. If they “model” it – consider it a compliment. If they “steal” it – make sure they know it’s not acceptable.

Cathy PreslandNo Gravatar March 2, 2012 at 8:09 am

so true! I use easy video player to host on my ‘sales’ sites – and I can choose whether to display controls (plus they have great stats). but more and more i am becoming a fan of YouTube to host eg blog videos. And I’m even using the private function on YouTube for client stuff. It’s so easy and no paying for s3.

Great tips Derek as always 🙂

Cathy PreslandNo Gravatar March 2, 2012 at 8:11 am

Oh and btw ISAAC – I notice that when I post a video on YouTube with good search terms it finds it’s way all over the web. Sometimes this is good because there’s a link but sometimes people are just taking the content and the link isn’t live. Not good! I don’t follow up -guess it depends how valuable u consider your content. There are probably more important things to do…

Dickie ArmourNo Gravatar March 5, 2012 at 8:31 am

Hey Derek,
Great blog post – thanks.
Can you do a follow up article on the hosting aspect please?
You talk about professional hosting for videos. It would be great to have some examples of those so we newbies can choose and find out more.
I’ve always been mega impressed by Frank Kern’s videos and how they don’t let you scroll thru – you have to watch the whole thing.
Be great to know which services we can use to achieve the same results.
Thanks Derek

Derek – is appropriate for a real newbie? I’m a recent grad of IIN (in fact, your wife is one of my favorite instructors – I loved the module that she taught) and am just starting my health coaching. I am about to launch my first virtual program and was about to create videos to post on youtube and then on my Optimize Press Sales Page, but wondering if would be a better way to go. Thanks!

Derek FredricksonNo Gravatar October 7, 2012 at 8:06 am

Hi Ellen – if you’re just starting out, I’d recommend YouTube for now since it’s easy, effective and of course 100% free. Once you start creating more videos for online group training programs, I’d consider something more professional and secure like ezs3. Or, you can try a pro account at and it’ll do the same. Thanks for asking!

Another reason to host a sales video on a professional site is for tracking purposes. In other words, knowing precisely who’s watching your video. The hosting service we use (Wistia) allows you to see who is watching your video and what they’re viewing. i.e. if you share videos with a prospect and they watch a bunch of what you share, and repeatedly, you know they’re interested. If they don’t watch a lick, probably not a hot prospect…
